Cummins ISLe engine parts
Features and Benefits
Design enhancements include the Cummins High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) fuel system, and combined engine/aftertreatment system Integrated Emissions Management (I.E.M.). These provide increased power and torque for Euro 4 without an adverse impact on running costs. In fact, compared to Euro 3, the fuel economy is improved by up to 7% with service intervals increased by up to 60% depending on duty cycle.
The ISLe engine, which was previewed at last month’s Busworld exhibition in Belgium, features full authority electronic control with a high pressure common rail fuel system capable of generating extremely high injection pressures. This translates to refined and rapid power delivery, reduced noise, and improved cold start. With the new fuel system, maintaining peak injection pressure is no longer dependent on engine speed, load conditions or fuelling capability. Injection pressure can be virtually constant at all speeds, realizing greater flexibility and precision in controlling both injection rates and timing.
The ISLe engine will meet the Euro 4 emissions legislation with the I.E.M. system using Selective Catalytic Reduction (S.C.R.) technology. It is a fully integrated engine management and after-treatment system with all components available from Cummins Inc. companies. It includes a catalysed filter which significantly reduces NOx emissions and at the same time filters out particulate matter. The whole system is controlled and monitored from the engine mounted ECM, which improves reliability, lowers cost and provides ease of installation. This single source approach offers coach and bus builders the complete engine to exhaust pipe solution all warranted by Cummins.
Lower maintenance costs are achievable thanks to a combination of long service intervals and a simpler design. Minimal maintenance intervention is required for the ISLe, valve set checks are way beyond industry standard intervals, while fuel injectors require no scheduled inspection. The water filter has been eliminated but is still available as an option. The auto-tensioning fan drive belt requires only visual inspection, easing the replacement.
Simon Guest, Cummins Euro Certified Product Leader says “The latest ISLe provides a compact low, weight package with a global emissions capability. It is available for Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 4 Hybrid and EPA certified installations, with excellent performance, heavy duty durability and low operating costs for higher powered bus and coach installations.”
Cummins Inc. is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines. With over 24,000 employees, Cummins reported sales of £8.4 billion in 2004 and produced over 700,000 engines. A substantial manufacturing presence in Europe includes the mid-range engine plant at Darlington UK and the high horsepower engine plant at Daventry, UK.
